Consumers remain optimistic about the economy. The University of Michigan’s consumer-confidence index remained largely unchanged in January, despite the turmoil in financial markets. It helps that Americans (1)are not much exposed to shares: only 14% of household wealth is invested in the stockmarket and 45% of Americans do not own shares at all.
